Ranges from projects we have built, before HST

New drain lines in a basement, heated floors and moving the toilet add to these ranges.

Renovating a bathroom in an older Hamilton house

Bathrooms in lower-city century homes, from Durand to Crown Point, come with their own list.

Often the only bathroom

We plan the order of work so the days without a toilet or shower are as few as possible, and tell you those days in advance.

Old supply pipes

Galvanized or mixed old piping is common. Replacing it inside the bathroom walls while they are open saves doing it later.

Plaster walls

Wet walls get cement board and a waterproofing membrane instead of patched plaster, so tile has something solid behind it.

Floors out of level

A century of settling means the floor is levelled before tile, or large tiles will rock and crack.

Little ventilation

An exhaust fan sized for the room and ducted outside, not into the attic.

Small footprint

A tub-shower with a niche, a narrower vanity and storage built into the wall make a small room work.

Adding a bathroom in a Hamilton basement

With a rough-in

Many newer homes in Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Binbrook and Waterdown have drains already in the basement floor. Building the bathroom on them is the simplest case.

Without one

The concrete floor is cut and new drains run to the main stack. If the main drain sits higher than the basement floor, a pump system carries waste up to it.

For a second unit

A basement apartment needs its own bathroom, and Hamilton allows second units in most houses. See basement renovation in Hamilton for what the unit needs.

Permits and condos in Hamilton
Permits

Rebuilding a bathroom with the drains in place usually needs no permit. A new bathroom, or moving drains and vents, needs a City of Hamilton building permit with plumbing inspections. Hamilton takes the full fee with the application, and we plan for it.

Condo bathrooms

Downtown condos need board approval, elevator bookings and set work hours, and the unit below is the reason waterproofing matters even more. We handle the paperwork.

Questions

Hamilton bathroom renovation FAQ

Do you renovate bathrooms in Hamilton?

Yes. We have rebuilt an ensuite in Waterdown, which is part of Hamilton, and we work across the lower city, Westdale, the Mountain, Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Dundas and Binbrook from our Burlington office.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Hamilton?

Most bathrooms we build fall in the range in the table above, before HST. Moving the toilet or shower drain, a larger glass shower and a double vanity add to it, while a main bathroom kept in the same layout costs less. We give you a fixed price after a visit.

It is our only bathroom. How long will we be without it?

We plan the work so the days without a toilet or shower are as few as possible and tell you which days in advance. Most bathrooms take two to three weeks in total.

Can you add a bathroom in my basement?

Yes. If there is a rough-in, it is straightforward. If not, we cut the floor and run new drains, and use a pump system if the main drain is higher than the floor.

Do I need a permit?

Not to rebuild a bathroom with the drains in place. A new bathroom or moved drains needs a City of Hamilton permit, and we handle it.

Do you renovate condo bathrooms?

Yes. We get the board's approval, book the elevator and work within the building's hours.

How do you stop leaks?

A Schluter membrane on the shower walls and floor, every seam and corner sealed before tile, and glass measured after the tile is finished.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. Four years on our workmanship, plus the manufacturers' warranties on fixtures, vanity and glass.
